Surfing in Bali

Bali is truly one beautiful island where you can start learning something new, or to do something you love, or to challenge yourself about the skill you have. Bali has everything from warm water, great climate, world-class waves, and warm people. These all can make you become addicted to one of the fun activities: surfing.

Although Bali has a dry and wet season, it doesn't really have an off-season for surfing. The dry season (from June to September) is when the surfing season starts on Bali’s West coast: Kuta to Uluwatu. The wet season (from December to late March) is good for surfing on the East Coast: Nusa Dua, Sanur and Serangan. Depending on your location around the island, Bali has wide range of waves for any level of surfers, for both beginners and professional surfers.

Some nice surf sites suitable for beginners are Kuta Beach, Legian Beach, Batu Bolong Beach in Canggu and Seminyak Beach.

For intermediate surfers, you can try Echo Beach, Berawa Beach, Tanah Lot Beach, Padang Galak Beach, Matahari Terbit Beach, Segara Beach, Sindhu Beach, Mertasari Beach, Serangan Beach, Sanur Beach, Tukad Balian Beach, Medewi Beach.

And for Professional or Advanced-surfers, you can find more challenging spots like Uluwatu Beach, Suluban Beach, Impossible Beach, Balangan Beach, Keramas Beach, Bingin Beach, Padang-padang Beach, Dreamland Beach, and Pererenan Beach.

Most top surf schools are located around the Kuta area: Rip Curl School of Surf, Up 2 U Surf School and Odysseys Surf School.

Rental starts from USD 5 per hour, depending on the location. Some surf accommodations are also widely available in most surf spots, like in Kuta, Balian, Canggu, Seminyak or in the Uluwatu area. And of cause Surf Tours are also available starting around USD 40 for one-day tour.

Traditional Balinese Celebrations

This is our last entry of this year, and we can really feel the Christmas spirit right around the corner. This reminds us about some similar big holidays in Bali, such as Nyepi, Galungan, and Kuningan. Here is some more information about those celebrations and how you can participate.

Nyepi

Nyepi, a public holiday in Indonesia, and is a day of silence for the Balinese people. It is devoted for self-reflection, fasting, and meditation for the Hindu Balinese from 6 a.m. until 6 a.m. the next morning. All residents in Bali, including tourists, have to respect and obey the restrictions on this day, such as: no fire, no light, no working, no traveling, and no entertainment. The only ones outside are the¬†‚Äúpecalang‚ÄĚ (traditional Balinese security personnel) and emergency vehicles for life-threatening conditions.

Although some hotels let their guests do their activity inside the hotels, no one is allowed onto the beaches or streets. The streets are quiet and empty, airport and harbor are closed. Since there is no electricity at night, we can see the stars shining very bright in the dark sky. There is nothing you can do to participate on Nyepi itself besides feeling the silence and peaceful mood that you cannot find anywhere else. However, you can enjoy ‚Äúogoh-ogoh‚ÄĚ (statue forms of mythological beings, mostly demons) parade in the street, in a night before Nyepi.

Galungan

Galungan is a feast day of the victory of Dharma (goodness) over Adharma (unrighteousness). On this day, the Balinese celebrate with joy, grace, and glory by putting penjor (a tall, curved bamboo pole decorated with coconut leaves with an offering at the base) along the road in front of their home. The street becomes so magnificently beautiful with natural and religious atmosphere. Galungan is celebrated every 210 days and always falls on Wednesday.

Kuningan

Kuningan, which comes from the word ‚Äúkauningan‚ÄĚ, basically means introspection, and human-being is expected to re-arrange the harmonious life in accordance with the purpose of the Hindu religion. To celebrate it, the Balinese use particular offerings to reflect Tamiang (the protection and the natural rotation of the wheel), and Endongan (knowledge and devotion for peace of mind). On this day, people usually make yellow rice a symbol of prosperity. Kuningan is celebrated 10 days after Galungan and always falls on Saturday.

On Galungan and Kuningan days, you can participate by visiting the temples in the morning when the most of the Balinese come with their traditional dress and bring some offerings for Hyang Widhi (Lords). After praying, they will have lunch and some leisure activities with family.

Although Galungan and Kuningan are not public holidays in Indonesia, but both are big holidays and celebrations in Bali. All governance office and some business are closed during these days.

Food in Bali

Exploring when traveling is not only about the places, but also about the food. For those travelers who are curious or interested in the culinary experience when traveling, Bali has a wide option for you to choose from, local Indonesian food (Balinese, Padang, Javanese), Asian, Western or European. In Bali you will find a vast range of vegan and vegetarian food, deliciously prepared, like the traditional Gudeg dish, made from the locally grown jack fruit!

You can definitely enjoy more good and unique food experiences, such as traditional Indonesian Rijsttafel, known from the Colonial period of Indonesia. Rijsttafel can be found in european restaurants through out Europe, to where it has spread from the previous colonial power, the Netherlands. For around 400 SEK (about 40 euro), you can eat a buffé of Indonesian dishes served in the center of the table surrounding a large basket of steamed white rice.

Many travelers to Bali are worried about getting "Bali Belly". Because of the popularity of the island from tourists, this has become the local nickname of ordinary travelers diarrhea. In order to avoid this unpleasant experience, we advice our guests to transition into the local cuisine gradually.

Bali Wedding by Tirtha has a list of recommended restaurants in Bali that complies with our own high standard for food and cleanliness. We also arrange cooking classes where our guests can learn to cook traditional Indonesian dishes in a fun and relaxed environment. Our cooking classes are perfect for couples or as a group activity during your stay in Bali!

Feel free to contact us for more information regarding our activities in Bali or Indonesian food experiences!

Explore Bali's hidden treasures!

Bali has become one of the most popular tourist islands in the world. With a wide option of activities and entertainments available, everything from relaxing, cultural, mystical, to more adventurous ones. Some activities, are even more fun to do as a couple, and one of those is scuba diving.

Located in the Coral Triangle of Indonesia, Bali has long been known as one of the best dream destinations for scuba divers from all over the world. It has perfect sunshine, crystal water, colorful coral reefs and fishes. Everyone, including non-certified diver, can enjoy this amazing underwater world.

If you are an adventurous couple, this activity is one you should try when you are in Bali. Many couples, in fact, enjoy this activity. You can learn new skills, get new experience, support each other, have fun together and enter a stunning new world. You can also create unforgettable memories by bringing your memories back home with under water photography or having pre-wedding and wedding photo shots underwater.

If you don't have any diving experience, it's no problem, the local dive centers have suitable diving programs for you, like the Discover Scuba Diving-program. This program will allow you to experience one-full-day of diving. The diving instructor will brief you about basic skills, and you will have the chance to practice these skills in the pool before exploring the sea.

Bali has many dive sites to explore from North to East Bali, from beginner to professional divers. The season in Bali for diving is good almost all year along, although December to February can be rainy.
Want to go scuba diving? We will be glad to help you arrange your activities in Bali.
